New System

Hello,
My name is Sean. I have just recently set up my first Aquaponics system. Aquaponics is the integration of aquaculture and hydroponics. The idea is to grow fish and plants together for food or aesthetic pleasure. I hope to be able to share my endeavors of my initial operation as well as be source of reference for others interested in this fascinating field of agriculture.

An aquaponic system uses fish waste as plant food and the plants act as a biological filter, helping to clean the water. The water is reused throughout the cycle and only lost to evaporation or transpiration. This system is set up to be a sustainable source of nutrition where one can grow fruits and vegetables alongside an ideal protein source. Aquaponics uses only about 10% of the water used by conventional farming and gardening.

I hope to gain much experience with aquaponics and desire to make it my career. I built my initial system to get that experience and begin to understand the processes involved. I encourage everyone who thinks aquaponics is the way of the future to read all they can and then just jump right in and experiment.

I will post a description of my system along with as much explanation as I can put together. Thank you and happy cultivating
